Rainy Days

Thursday, March 27, 2014
I realized yesterday, that when the weather is gloomy and sad, I like to call people on the phone just to chat away the time. That means I ended up spending quite a bit of time talking with my sisters yesterday! We cover all the topics: food, kids, exercising, clothes, sewing, you name it, we probably talked about it.

And over the course of our meandering conversation (don't you love how conversations do that!), my younger sister mentioned that her girls like playing 'store.' They have the fake food, a little cash register, and even a little grocery cart (I think. I may have added the grocery cart in my head.)

But what their store is without, is miniature grocery bags. And more specifically, little market bags that look remarkably like the real thing. Even down to having the repeating red THANK YOU on them. So, being a sucker for miniature things, I decided to make one. Right then.

It's not exactly like the real thing, but a very cute version if I may say so. Yikes, I love it!

I guess rainy days are good for something! (Well, something other than putting all that wonderful water in our lakes and rivers.)

My favorite fabrics of late are starting to remind me of Cadbury mini eggs and speckled jelly beans.  I may need to take a long walk down the seasonal aisle at the nearest grocery store just to smell all that sugar. Yum!

Until then, I should organize all my pretty fabric in neat rows of color coordinated goodness. And if that ever happens, I'll take a picture of it for sure.

Gone Floral

Thursday, March 13, 2014
Most of the time, I don't really like large floral prints. I love a small floral print, but as soon as a floral print becomes actual size or larger, I steer clear of it.

BUT, a while back (okay, maybe a year or more) I was looking for some fabric to match some I already had but didn't want to use without coordinating it with another print. I found Moda's Marmalade floral fabric and didn't hate it. I won't say that I loved it, or even really liked it, but it matched the fabric I already had.

Well, both fabrics sat on my shelf, constantly reminding me that I did, at one time, have big plans for them. And the longer they sat on the shelf, the more I found myself actually liking the floral. Now, I completely understand the ramifications that come with admitting that I do like a floral fabric. So to those who grew up with me, and may call me out on it, I know. I don't like florals. But I like this one.

Now, the fabric has become a skirt. And I love it. I wish I had a little girl who did too, because wouldn't this be adorable with a little denim jacket and some gold sandals? Um, yeah, it would.

It's a basic skirt, made from just one long strip of fabric with a hem on the bottom and an elastic casing on the top. I like to put a bow or button in the middle for fun. It helps kids know which side is the front, and when they line up the bow, straight below their belly button, it's on just right!

10 More Days

Last Saturday was a perfect reminder that Spring is almost here! The weather was perfectly perfect if you ask me. I'm not one that loves summer (that may have a lot to do with my fair complexion) and while winter brings playing in the snow and hot chocolate, one can really only consume so much hot chocolate before it starts to show. Let's face it.
So before it starts snowing again, I put together a collection of things that make me happy knowing Spring is just around the corner.

I just made this fun minky (minkee, cuddle fabric, whatever you call it!) pillow for a neighbor. Did you know that appliqueing on minky isn't hard at all? I looked all over the internet for tips and tricks about appliqueing cotton onto minky and couldn't find any info so I just went for it! I'm glad I did because it was easy as pie (although I've never made a pie because isn't pie crust hard to make?!) and came out perfectly. I was careful to not iron the dots, but other than that, I just used the tip of my iron to iron down the applique and then used a tiny zig-zag stitch on my sewing machine to secure.

And my favorite part of the whole project? That bow on the button! I think it adds the cutest finishing touch to this sweet little pillow. :)
