Never too old to learn new things

I  blame Pinterest entirely for my latest craft addiction.

I was just having a quick look around (okay, I'll admit that occasionally, Pinterest does suck me in, but for the most part, I really do try to limit myself to 10 minutes...or so. :) ) when I saw a pin for stampmaking. Yep, the kind of thing I remember doing once before as a kid in junior high with a pink eraser and an exacto knife.

After I repinned that cute little pin, I really couldn't stop thinking about it. Does that ever happen to you? It's a little silly to admit, but I just kept thinking about this adorable smiling cloud and knew I had to try stampmaking. I spent a couple hours (Time flies when the kids are tucked in bed!) researching and then decided to just try it. But on the cheap. So, I ordered some beginner materials, along with buying some thick white erasers from the craft store, and when everything arrived, I just started carving.

And...I love it. I love digging into the rubber, creating funny tree-like grooves. I love how relaxing it is to create whatever I want.

I did learn, that I need a lot more practice. Tiny shapes are hard to control, and just one ill-placed line can ruin the stamp, so I have to be careful, and patient, and take my time. I'm not very good at any of those things, but I think stampmaking and I are still a perfect match.

Just for me.

I've been wanting to embroider something. Oh no, not real fancy embroidery, just a simple running stitch. I also wanted to add something patriotic to my front room. I'm not much for decorating, so simple is the key word for anything I make for my home. (Honestly, I really don't decorate! I have a total of one decorative item hanging on a wall...out of all the walls in my entire house! I definitely 'do' simple.)

This pillow fits the bill perfectly. I was able to embroider, make something patriotic, and keep it simple, all in one!

I sewed up a simple envelope closure pillow cover, cut out a simple outline of the USA, and adhered it to the fabric with a heat'n'bond type material.

Turns out that stitching this up was a very relaxing project and I enjoyed every single minute of it. Me, and my needle and thread.

And for the next month, I get to see that cute little pillow sitting on my chair.

I like it there.

It reminds me that I need to occasionally take some time to make something I want to make. So simple, so imperfectly perfect.

So don't forget to make something just for yourself, every now and then. It feels good, even if it's just a simple little pillow.

Thanks for stopping by,

Kristin
